Warsaw’s Old Town is a reconstruction. Nine tenths of the city was destroyed in the war — most of the centre deliberately, in 1944, after the uprising — and the square, the barbican and the Royal Castle were rebuilt from pre-war photographs, survey drawings and Bellotto’s eighteenth-century paintings of the same streets; UNESCO listed the result in 1980 for exactly that reason.
