His heart did: it is sealed inside a pillar of the Holy Cross Church on Krakowskie Przedmieście, a few hundred metres from the flat he grew up in. Around nine tenths of this city was destroyed between 1939 and 1945, and the places where that happened — the ghetto streets, the uprising, the camps within a day’s travel of the station — are visited from Warsaw all year round. The oldest part of Warsaw is seventy years old.
The centre was razed in 1944, after the uprising, and the market square, the barbican and the Royal Castle were rebuilt from pre-war photographs, survey drawings and Bellotto’s eighteenth-century paintings of the same streets. UNESCO listed the result in 1980 — for the reconstruction, not the age. Walk it with someone who can tell you which wall is which.

The 126p — the Maluch, “the little one” — was built in Poland from 1973 to 2000 and was, for most families, the only car there was. The survivors now work as tour cars, and they run three different itineraries: general city sightseeing, the communist-era routes, and Jewish-heritage tours of the ghetto streets. The Polish Vodka Museum
Praga’s Koneser works distilled vodka from 1897 until the 1990s; the museum now occupies the old rectification building on the east bank. The visit is guided, runs in fixed slots and ends with a tasting, and it sits inside a courtyard of restaurants and bars if you want to make an evening of it.

An hour on the Vistula
Warsaw is the rare European capital whose river was never embanked on both sides: the right bank is sand, willow and protected habitat, and herons work it in the middle of the city. The traditional galar — a flat-bottomed Vistula boat — is the most-reviewed way onto the water. The boats run roughly April to October.

When the river boats stop, Warsaw moves indoors.
The Vistula cruises run roughly April to October, and the market square is a cold place to stand still in January. The city’s winter happens under a roof: a concert salon, a museum, a distillery tour, a long lunch of pierogi. None of them mind what the weather is doing.
